Lifelong Development

PRACTICAL APPLICATION

Lifelong development implies the constant responsibility of an individual for his learning and improvement of specific skills and qualities through any opportunities provided by life — formal and informal.

The scale of twelve human functions described above is the most concrete one which can be directly experienced by any of us. It reflects the abilities that a person must master in order to create values in practical life. Noting the functions of certain levels of his body, an individual can focus on the most relevant for himself at the present moment in order to master it, rely on it and then rise higher.

It is not easy to distinguish which of the twelve functions is the most relevant at a certain stage of life, since all of them, to one degree or another, are constantly present in the life of each of us. This is easier to do if we pay attention to what value of the six listed above the person is currently producing, for which clients, partners or an employer are paying him.

In the individual's life, such periods are also possible when he does not work and does not earn money in any way, being, as many people call it, “in search of himself.” How can he determine which function he needs to rely on in order to “find himself” and start moving up in his development?

The answer to this question is given by the scale of personality centres, which at the same time shows the status of an individual — Businessman, Craftsman, Leader or Mentor, depending on which centre of his personality he best masters.

If an individual does not work, but is potentially able to earn his living and is not physically limited by anything, he needs to start with the first value Result. He can do this in the status of Businessman, either selling his own efforts and working hours as an employee, or doing own business by selling goods or services.

A person on a higher level of development having a specific craftsmanship or skill can start right away with Master status, either providing his service or producing his own product. Such a person will not have the question of what to produce — his product will be born from him by itself, like a child from a woman. He is also unlikely to doubt his status. But, if he is still not sure, then it is better for him to start from the status of Businessman in order to mature in it while gradually approaching his potential as Master.

The two upper statuses — Leader and Mentor — imply that an individual already has sufficient authority, people can obey him, receive certain benefits for themselves from relations with him and bring income to him as well. A person in the status of Leader will have customers and projects for which he gets allocated a budget, and a Mentor will have students who will subsidise his school.

Knowing one’s actual status out of the four possible allows one to not waste time on passing through those functional levels, or development steps that we are already able to perform easily.

The potential of any individual is naturally concealed from him or her. Will our potential develop fully, or partially? Will it develop in a standard way, or will it take a very personal pattern?
